Careers at TacAero

Everyone here helps a pilot get better.

In the cockpit, the shop or the front office, we hire people who would be good at that whatever their title is.

We don't have open roles right now. We keep strong applications on file and reach out when a spot opens.

Who we're looking for

  • A teacher at heart. Whether you're explaining a crosswind landing, a magneto check or a schedule change, you make it clear and you're patient doing it.
  • Small details matter to you. Clean airplanes, a spotless hangar floor, a logbook entry done right. Nobody has to ask, because everyone knows it's their job.
  • No job is beneath you. Everyone pitches in where the day needs them. Everyone takes out the trash. Everyone helps lift.
  • You never stop training. You want to get better, you take a debrief well, and you stick with a long upgrade because you know it's worth it.
  • Professional with everyone. In one week we might train military aircrew, a corporate pilot and someone in their first tailwheel airplane. Each gets your full attention.
  • You love these airplanes. Cubs from the 1940s, a Waco biplane, modern backcountry airplanes and a GB1. You want to be around them and keep them flying.

Questions applicants ask

What else do you look for in an instructor?

On top of everything above: the art of stick and rudder, and enjoying introducing new people to structured training. Teaching is the job here, not a stop on the way to another cockpit.

How much tailwheel time do I need?

There's no fixed minimum. Our average instructor has about 1,000 hours of tailwheel time.

What is the upgrade process?

Because we fly many different airplanes and courses, every instructor goes through our upgrade process, regardless of previous experience. It typically takes several months and includes many internal checkrides. During that time you work as a TacAero Support Pilot: ferry and repositioning flights, teaching academics, and ground operations such as fueling and staging airplanes.

Full-time or contract?

Both, for every role.

I'm applying for maintenance or operations. Do I need the video?

Yes. Every applicant, for every role, sends the Skids versus Slips video.

Where would I work?

At Gillespie County Airport (T82) in Fredericksburg, Texas, with travel for Expeditions.

I applied before and wasn't selected. Should I apply again?

Yes. None of our current instructors were selected on their first application. If this is for you, don't give up.
