While primary flight training isn’t part of our core offerings, we occasionally accommodate it on a case-by-case basis, depending on aircraft and instructor availability. Our primary focus remains on tailwheel endorsements and advanced instruction. That said, our sister company in Hood River, Oregon offers full-time private pilot training in tailwheel aircraft. Let us know if you'd like to be connected with their team or discuss options with us directly.
TacAero operates a fleet of modern tailwheel aircraft, including Super Cubs, Top Cubs, Carbon Cubs, XCubs, Waco UPF-7 and the Gamebird GB1. Specific aircraft used will depend on the course and your training goals.
Rather than charging by the hour, TacAero offers flat-rate course fees that include a set amount of classroom instruction, briefings, and flight time. For detailed pricing, please contact us directly.
Deposits are required to secure your spot and are non-refundable. However, we understand that plans can change, and we offer rescheduling at no additional cost, subject to certain terms and conditions.
Whilst we don’t accept VA benefits we do offer a 10% discount to all active and retired military.
Absolutely. If poor weather is expected to impact the majority of your scheduled training, we’re happy to reschedule at no additional cost prior to commencement of training. Your instructor will reach out the week prior to discuss the forecast and available options.
We recommend arriving the day before your training begins to give yourself time to settle in and get a good night’s rest. On your final day, training usually wraps up by early afternoon, so evening departures are generally suitable.
We’re conveniently located near two major airports.
1. San Antonio International (SAT) – Our top recommendation. It offers a wide range of carriers and is just about an hour’s drive from Fredericksburg.
2. Austin-Bergstrom International (AUS) – Also a great option, located roughly 1.5 hours away by car.
Once you’re signed up, we’ll send you a welcome packet with detailed recommendations for accommodations, dining, and local entertainment. Most of our customers choose to stay conveniently on-site at our home airport at The Hangar Hotel - hangarhotel.com
Our 5-day courses run Monday through Friday. For 3-day courses, you can choose between a Monday–Wednesday or Thursday–Saturday schedule.
TacAero offers flight training Monday through Saturday. However, Saturdays are reserved only for courses that began earlier in the week and are concluding that day. We do not schedule standalone training sessions on Saturdays. Our administrative office is open Monday through Friday.
Classes and Briefings start at 8:30 AM each morning. This allows our instructors the necessary time beforehand to prepare the aircraft and classroom for the day’s training activities.
Daily wrap-up times vary based on each pilot’s mental and physical saturation. We typically aim to finish around 4:00 PM, but we’re happy to continue until 5:00 PM if the pilot is still absorbing information effectively.
Yes. Since all of our training is one-on-one, you’re welcome to work with your CFI to adjust daily start times as needed. We regularly adapt the weekly schedule to maximize flying during good weather and focus on ground instruction when conditions aren't suitable for flight.
Our training is designed to be one-on-one to ensure each pilot gets the most out of their experience. However, we do allow friends or groups to train together as a pair by assigning a second instructor and aircraft. Please note that course fees apply per person, as each pilot receives individual instruction, aircraft and resources.

Yes, training in your own aircraft is allowed. We do have some requirements such as dual controls and dual brakes for safety and instructional purposes. Let us know the make and model of your aircraft, and we’ll assess its suitability and assign you an instructor familiar with that specific type.
You’ll receive a welcome packet before your course with a full packing list. However, essentials include a headset, logbook, current pilot certificate and medical, photo ID, and emergency contact.
Absolutely! The scenery during training is stunning, and we encourage you to capture photos and videos. Just let your instructor know ahead of time so we can ensure mounts are secure and don’t interfere with safety or flight operations.
Yes! We offer gift certificates for all of our courses. It’s a great way to give someone the experience of tailwheel or backcountry flying.
